MODULE 2: Nature of Earth Science
Opened Sept 10, 2009.
LESSON 2.01 - Metrics
Standard: IE1.a
INSTRUCTION
In this lesson you will learn how geologists study the world around them using some tools and methods that have been proven successful.
As an introduction, please watch this video: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQPQ_q59xyw&feature=related)
To learn any science subject you must know how to communicate with other scientists. Throughout the world scientists use a common measuring system called the Metric System. The Metric System of measurement is the standard used by most scientific disciplines. The system is based upon measures of distance (in meters), volume (in liters), and mass (in grams). Scales of measurements increase or decrease as multiples of ten which facilitates expression of measurement values using the decimal system.
Also, watch this video for another visual explanation about the metric system and the multiples of 10. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCxDEB2t5Hc)
PRACTICE
1. Read about how the metric system is used for measurements in science in this file: “The Metric System and Measurement.doc”
2. View the slide show of 2.01-Reading a Graduated Cylinder.ppt
3. Complete the “2.01-Metric Worksheet”
4. Save the file as “2.01(yourname).doc
5. Click here to see a list of vocabulary terms that will be defined in this Module and used throughout the course.
